The words are not feminine. The “ista” ending in both languages indicate masculine nouns. These words, contrary to appearance do not really end in “a”. They end in “ista”. Since now, it is true, there are women dentists, if you are referring to such, at least in Spanish, you can use the feminine article.

el cliente = client, but a female client can be la clienta. el dentista = dentist of any gender, but a female dentist can be la dentista. el especialista = specialist; el estudiante = student of any gender, but a female student can be la estudiante. el esposo = spouse. Of course, some words, such as names of many occupations, are masculine when they refer to men and feminine when they refer to women, as in el dentista for the male dentist and la dentista for the female dentist. And there are some nouns whose meanings vary with gender., such as el cometa (comet) and la cometa (kite).
